3. Securities and Exchange Commission

4. Standard and Poors
Look here for the S&P 500 list, description and methodology. Also helpful are the real time indices and links to stock exchanges worldwide. While some data is reserved for subscribers, there is a wealth of free data including news briefs and pertinent commentaries related to worldwide investment activity.
